Akshardham, New Delhi : The mega architectural temple complex

Aksharadham, the mega architectural temple complex built near Nizamuddin Bridge, in the capital, New Delhi, India which was inaugurated by President A P J Abdul Kalam on 6th November 2005, dedicated to the nation, makes every Indian proud. This massive mega Akshardham Temple Complex explore an amazing world of Indian culture ornate with 20,000 statues, floral motifs, arches and exquisitely carved pillars. Spread over about 100 acres on the banks of River Yamuna in east Delhi, the complex was over four years in the making and cost Rs.2 billion, funded by donations from followers of the influential Swaminarayan sect. The architectural style is an imitation of the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.

Akshardham means the eternal, divine abode of the supreme God, the abode of eternal values and virtues of Akshar as defined in the Vedas and Upanishads where divine bhakti, purity and peace forever pervades. The Akshardham experience is an enlightening journey through India's glorious art, values and contributions for the progress, happiness and harmony of mankind. This beautiful 141-foot monument, an architectural marvel in pink sand stone and white marble, built without steel, consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and has a statue of Lord Swamynarayan in the sanctum sanctorum along with statues of India's great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities.

  Apart from the temple, you can relish…..
A 12-minute spectacular boat-ride experience of the 10,000 year old India's glorious heritage; an epic period film featuring an exciting and inspiring pilgrimage of Neelkanth Varni, a child-yogi, of 18th century India;
The exhibition halls that showcase unique 3-D dioramas and walk-through dioramas from the life of Bhagwan Swaminarayan;
The Yagnapurush Kunda - a fascinating combination of a Vedic Yagna Kund and a musical fountain;
Bharat Upvan - a magnificent natural and cultural ambience through its manicured lawns, lush gardens and wonderful bronze statues of the great role models of India.

In the past two decades, the Swaminarayan sect, which has followers mainly in Gujarat and among Gujaratis abroad, has built over 600 temples worldwide, including Britain and the US. And this is the second Akshradham temple in India. With a complex of temples and shrines set amidst sprawling lawns, prayer halls and spaces for meditation and communal gatherings, the Akshardham Temple is a new landmark in the National Capital Region. Akshardham is more than an architectural masterpiece; it is the living devotion of devotees to create Heaven on Earth.
